Purdue cruises past Marian 75-56 in exhibition opener

WEST LAFAYETTE-  Purdue opened up their 2018-19 season with a 75-56 exhibition opener win over Marian University.  Ryan Cline had the hot hand for the Boilermakers shooting 7-10 from three point range and finishing with 23 points.  Purdue returned one starter (Carson Edwards) from a senior heavy team in 2017-18.  Edwards struggled from the field shooting 3-12 overall and finished with 6 points.  Purdue coach Matt Painter was happy to see other players step up while Edwards struggled offensively.  Purdue big man Matt Haarms scored 12 points and pulled down five rebounds this evening.  Marian hung around with Purdue early in the second half until Purdue went on a 24-4 run midway through the 2nd half to pull away.  Marian’s TJ Henderson led the Knights with 15 points.  Purdue opens the season Tuesday night against Fairfeld at Mackey Arena.

Key Notes:

Purdue freshman Eric Hunter Jr. had 5 assists and 0 turnovers in 19 minutes of action tonight.

Purdue freshman Trevion Williams went 4-7 from the field scoring 9 points and grabbing 5 rebounds.  Trevion has the body of a mini Caleb Swanigan and wore #50 this evening.  Matt Painter still hasn’t decided who will redshirt this season.

Purdue transfer Evan Boudreaux scored 9 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in his first Boilermaker game.  Boudreaux transferred from Ivy League Dartmouth last season.

Attendance tonight was 13,588.
