Austin Dillon wins Daytona 500 in 3 car; 20 years after Earnhardt’s win

Austin Dillon won the 60th Daytona 500 in a wild race.  Dillon brings the 3 car into victory lane at Daytona 20 years after Dale Earnhardt Sr. took the #3 to victory lane in 1998.

Dillon had to bump his way on the final lap and knocked Aric Almirola into the wall and kept 2016 champion Denny Hamlin at bay to win. Hamlin finished 3rd today after coming back from a lap down in the race early.

The race was marred by several big wrecks.  The story of the race was big runs on the backstretch and blocking.  A lot of bumping and blocking took out a lot of contenders throughout the race.   Ryan Blaney was the fastest car all day long and led 114 laps before being wrecked.

Chase Elliott was an early contender and was taken out on lap 102.  Darrell Wallace Jr. finished 2nd in his rookie start at Daytona.

With the win, Austin Dillon has clinched a spot in the “Playoff Chase” in September.
