Last night, Purdue opened their 2017-18 campaign with a 105-74 home win over SIUE Edwardsville. Before the game started the Boilermakers unveiled their Big Ten-leading 23rd regular-season championship banner.
The Boilers bring back 4 starters from last season including Vince Edwards, Carson Edwards, PJ Thompson, and Dakota Mathias. Starting in place of the departed Caleb Swanigan was fellow 7-footer Issac Haas. Redshirt Freshman Matt Haarms easily is the new Mackey Arena fan favorite and received a roar and ovation when he was the first off the bench for Purdue. Haarms played well in his first game scoring 11 pts, 5 rebs, 2 blks in 18 minutes. Haarms was all over the court hustling and it is easy to see why he is the fan favorite on Keady Court. Haarms has grown 1 inch to 7’3” and gained 25 pounds to his frame to prepare for the upcoming season. Haarms will be a great addition to this Purdue team this year.
Purdue led by 20 at halftime and won by 31. Mathias led Purdue with 18 points 7 of 10 shooting from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line. Purdue had five players in double figures and balance scoring will continue to be what coach Matt Painter looks for this season. Sophomore Carson Edwards has gained a lot of muscle and bulk in the off-season and looks great being the floor general out there. Carson can create his own shot and make plays to get others open easily.
Purdue doesn’t get much time off to recap this game, Sunday Purdue takes on Chicago State at Mackey Arena in the first round of the “Batte 4 Atlantis” tournament.
The future continues to look good for Purdue and I have them predicted to finish 2nd in the Big Ten with a record of 25-5 overall and 13-5 in the Big Ten.Follow Us Here:
