The writing is on the wall and it’s just a matter of time this season before Colts owner Jim Irsay and GM Chris Ballard have had enough of Chuck Pagano and decide to look in a different direction. It has been long overdue and the majority of Colts fan agree that a change is needed.
Could it happen during the bye week? Will it happen at the end of the season? These are the scenarios that Irsay and Ballard have in front of them.
So after Chuck Pagano gets fired, where do Irsay and Ballard look? Do they look at someone “flashy” and favorite of the fans? Or do they dig deep and find a hidden gem that needs to be uncovered?
This is where I think that GM Chris Ballard will look down I 70 westward at Kansas City. Special Teams Coach Dave Toub is my prediction to be the next Indianapolis Colts coach. Toub worked with Ballard in Kansas City and Ballard has spoken highly about Toub previously.
Toub, 54 special teams coach has spent the past 4 years with the Chiefs and even though he coaches special teams, he his highly regarded by Chiefs head coach Andy Ried and throughout the league. Toub interviewed this past offseason with the Broncos and Chargers which shows he a serious candidate for a head coaching position.
Toub 2016 Chiefs special teams unit featured All-Pro and Pro Bowl rookie punt returner Tyreek Hill. From 2013-15, per Chiefs.com, Toub specials teams unit had 6 kick returns for touchdown which is the most in the NFL over that time span.
Toub and Ballard have previous experience together with the Bears Southwest area scouting and then the director of scouting with Chicago.
I think Toub is a top candidate for the position when it comes available and would be a good fit for the Colts who would have great experience working with Chris Ballard.
