Tom Crean was fired this afternoon to start “March Madness” off with a bang at 12:15pm EST. The timing was odd especially with the tournament just starting but IU Athletic Director Fred Glass finally said enough was enough. This was something the fans, alumni, and donors wanted done if not quicker. Crean finished his career with a record of 166-135 with 2nd lowest winning percentage from a IU coach. He led the Hoosiers to four NCAA Appearances.
Now Indiana has to look to make their fourth head coaching change since Bob Knight was fired in 2000. Where do the Hoosiers look ? I’ve compiled my own list of candidates that will probably be on Indiana’s radar for next season.
Strong Consideration :
Gregg Marshall (Wichita St) – Marshall has built Wichita State into what the Hoosiers are looking for with 30+ wins in four of the last five season. Marshall has been linked to the IU job before and has had some interest previously. Is this the time where Marshall will jump and take over the Hoosiers. Conveniently, Marshall is in Indianapolis this week with his Shockers taking on Dayton (Archie Miller another candidate) in the NCAA Tourney tomorrow. The would be a hire that IU fans, alumni and boosters would like.
Archie Miller (Dayton) – As mentioned above, Archie is in the consideration after leading Dayton to the NCAA tournament three of the last four seasons including a run to the Elite 8 in 2013-14. Miller has previous Big 10 ties with being a assistant coach under Thad Matta at Ohio State. Miller has built Dayton and has been waiting and waiting for the perfect opportunity to jump to a major program. This is that opportunity.
Some Consideration :
Dane Fife (Michigan St. Assistant) – What more would the Hoosiers want their their former alumni taking over. IU fans and alumni would welcome Dane back to Indiana where he has been an assistant before. Fife did have a stint as head coach of IPFW where his record was 82-97. Learning from a great coach of Tom Izzo would give Fife the pedigree he needs to lead IU back to the top of the Big 10.
Chris Holtmann (Butler) – Well, if you can’t lure Brad Stevens from Boston ( already said he wouldn’t leave), why not go after his replacement at Butler Chris Holtmann. Holtmann has kept Butler a contender since Stevens has left and has won 20 plus games each of the last 3 seasons. Also with Butler beating IU this year….Holtmann has shown he can handle the big boys.
Steve Alford (UCLA) – Steve, most beloved guy on Bloomington’s campus obviously is IU’s go-to candidate. Alford, from New Castle led the Hoosiers to their last national title in 1987 and is currently building UCLA back into a winner. Alford coached at Iowa, New Mexico before going to UCLA. This is a win-win for IU and Alford both, BUT Alford has the Ball family already committed to UCLA and has a talented team for years to come. He may not want to rebuild the Hoosiers for a few years.
My prediction : Either Gregg Marshall or Archie Miller is the next IU coach.Follow Us Here:
